Conditioning the Vinyl in Your Restaurant Booths

Booths

Restaurant booths are one of the best ways to maximize your
space in the dining room. The only catch is that they are upholstered in vinyl,
and vinyl needs some special care. Mind you, the task isn’t particularly
difficult, but doing it right will help you keep your furniture for years.

What Is Vinyl?

Vinyl is a type of plastic made from salt and ethylene,
believe it or not. It can be made into any number of materials. Used in
furniture, it provides a strong and resistant material that is easy to clean.
Really good vinyl can be mistaken for leather, but it is much simpler to
maintain. Not sure if your upholstery is vinyl or leather? Just look on the
back; leather looks the same on both sides, while vinyl has an easily
distinguished backing.

Regular Maintenance

Regular care will keep your vinyl supple and flexible.
Ultraviolet light, chemicals and time will cause changes to the material that
will lead to brittleness and cracks. The most important way to prevent problems
with your vinyl is to condition it properly and regularly. Choose a conditioner
specific for vinyl and time your application properly.

The first dose should be applied even before use. Use a
clean, lightly dampened cloth and wipe down the vinyl with a little vinyl
cleaner. If needed, scrub a bit to remove any set in dirt from shipping or
installation. Rinse the vinyl and dry it, then spray on the conditioning
treatment and let it dry completely before the furniture is used. The process is the same in subsequent
applications which should be performed monthly.

Figure out a way to clean and condition each area on a
schedule that won’t interfere with your regular customer base. This might be
early in the mornings, after hours or even during a break. Just make sure it
gets done.

Special Situations

Let’s say you purchased used vinyl restaurant booths. These
may be dirtier or have mold or mildew stains. Clean the vinyl with vinyl
cleaner and then use a mixture of ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and water along
with a small brush to kill the mold and mildew. Then wipe it away. Rinse very well and let the furniture dry
completely. Finally, apply your conditioner.

Why Use Product-Specific Cleaners and Conditioners?

There are many different types of plastics and each needs
the right care. The point of using the right products is to extend the
functional life of your furniture. Furniture is a huge investment for any
restaurateur, and it just makes sense to get the most out of it. The wrong
products, including those made for other types of plastic, may very well
shorten the life of your furniture and make it sticky or unattractive.

If you don’t know which product to use with your restaurant
booths then ask. Your restaurant supplier will know which product is the best
for your particular furniture. If you
need more specific directions for use, call the manufacturer. While this may
all seem like a time consuming venture, it will more than pay off in the end.
