When it’s a restaurant owner or manager’s job to keep the cafe tables full, the last thing they want on their plate is more paperwork. Thanks to taxes, revenue and a variety of other factors, though, some of these records are mandatory. Other paperwork, such as a restaurant manager log, is optional. The benefits of restaurant manager logs, though, should inform a restaurateur’s decision as to whether they need one or not.

1. Keeps Managers Up to Date on Policy Changes
Not every new policy requires an off-the-clock employee meeting. If cigarette breaks are cut out or the hostess becomes responsible for cleaning cafe tables when it’s slow, this type of information can simply be spread at the beginning of a shift. If a manager is on vacation or just taking a few days off, though, they may miss out on the new policy entirely. By having a restaurant manager log to read over when they return, they’ll be completely up to date on any new rules that have been implemented.

A restaurant manager logbook does much more than just keep everyone up to date on recent changes. In fact, it can actually help predict future trends that could affect sales, staffing and a variety of other factors. Of course, just looking at that raw data may leave out the fact that a terrible storm came through, a car accident blocked the entrance for three hours, or one of the most popular items was “86ed.” This is all information that should be kept in the logbook, so one year from now, when a manager looks at a potential slow day, they’ll understand any potentially mitigating factors.

No matter how hard a restaurateur tries to hire only the best employees, they’re going to end up with a few that just don’t make the cut. In reality, even great workers can make careless mistakes. Not all of these situations, though, call for an official write-up.

This doesn’t mean, however, that incidents shouldn’t be noted. If this information is in the manager log, each shift will be run by someone who knows if there were earlier issues. This means every manager won’t see each infraction as a one-time mistake.

Whether an eatery is filled with fancy cafe tables or simple restaurant booths, owners sometimes find it difficult to get essential information from managers. It could be difficult to get in contact with them after hours, or the manager could simply forget to pass on important information.

The restaurateur will know what each of their managers is doing during every shift, and this increased accountability can improve the overall in-store culture.

While it may seem like just another hassle, a restaurant manager log can go a long way in removing several other headaches. Communication will quickly be improved, and this is one of the most important parts of a functioning eatery. Keeping customers at the cafe tables happy might be a full-time job, but there should always be a few minutes afterwards to write in the log.
